3 Days to Halloween: Win the Shoppers Everyone Else Gave Up On
Most of Halloween’s $13.5 billion is already spent. Here’s how ecommerce brands can win the last-minute shoppers still buying before Saturday.
Here’s a plot twist for your last-minute Halloween plan: most of the money is already gone. NRF expects a record $13.5 billion this year, and 49% of shoppers started in September or earlier. Only 12% of adults wait until the last two weeks of October.
So is it too late? Not if you know who’s left.
Among people who actually wear costumes, just 6% wait until the final two weeks. That’s a small crowd, but it’s a crowd with a deadline, no patience, and a clear need. They don’t browse. They buy.
Your job is to be the easiest answer on their screen.
Lead with “arrives in time.” A late shopper cares about delivery more than discount. Put your delivery cutoff on every product page, in your ads, and in your email subject lines. If you can’t deliver by October 31, switch the offer to “digital gift card” or “pickup today” instead of losing the click.
Sell what’s actually in stock. Trending costumes are often sold out at big retailers by October 30 and 31, and shoppers are left hunting for substitutes. If you still have popular sizes and characters, say so loudly: “In stock. Ships today.”
Don’t race the discounters on price. Target and Walmart run 40 to 50% off pre-Halloween clearance from October 24 to 29, so a deep markdown from you won’t stand out. Win on speed, bundles and convenience: a costume plus accessories plus candy in one cart beats a slightly lower price on one item.
Meet them where they search. Online search is still the top source of costume ideas at 32%. Make sure your titles, stock status and prices are accurate in your feeds today, because last-minute buyers click the first result that looks ready to ship.
On November 1, leftover stock at major retailers drops 50 to 90%. Decide now what you’ll mark down, bundle or hold for next year, so you aren’t guessing on Sunday morning.
And remember: Black Friday is next. Whatever you learn this week about delivery cutoffs, stock gaps and which ads drove sales is a free rehearsal for November.
Last-minute Halloween shoppers are a small group with big urgency. You won’t win them with the best price. You’ll win them by being in stock, fast and obvious.
Three days is plenty. Start with your delivery message today.
